Finding your place in the job market isn’t always straightforward. For Judy, a determined and experienced professional living on the North West, the road to her next career step involved persistence, training, and the right support at the right time.
Judy’s background is diverse. Originally trained as an Enrolled Nurse in London, she moved to Australia working in the NSW prison system for 25 years, where she gained experience in both support work and corrections, before moving to Tasmania. Despite her strong skillset, she faced challenges breaking into local employment opportunities.
That’s when she connected with the Regional Jobs Hub, West North West Working.
When Judy first reached out, she was looking for something different — flexible, part-time work that would allow her to keep contributing while moving away from the physically demanding roles of her past.
“I knew I needed to keep working, but I wanted something more flexible and less taxing than my past roles. That’s why I came to the Jobs Hub — to figure out what was next.”
Through the Jobs Hub, Judy began working one-on-one with her Local Engagement Officer, Alyssia, to refresh her resume, craft tailored cover letters, and build interview skills.
“Alyssia really helped me make my resume current and showed me how to write cover letters that made sense for each job. Her encouragement kept me going when I felt unsure.”
Alyssia remembers their first meeting clearly.
“When we first met, Judy was frustrated by the process – searching for the right job, writing a new resume, and tackling selection criteria. But I could see straight away that she was motivated and willing to try something new.”
Gaining Confidence and New Skills
With personalised support behind her, Judy found the confidence to step into new opportunities. Judy joined TMEC and atWork Australia’s WinNTE Program, designed to give women the skills and tickets to become job ready for non-traditional trades.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the WinNTE Program. I gained my white card, confined spaces ticket, and first aid training. These were things I’d never imagined myself doing, it opened my eyes.”
Although she was one of only three to complete the program, Judy was proud of her achievement.
“I wish more of us had finished, but I’m proud to be one of the three who made it through. It gave me a real sense of achievement.”
She credits the Jobs Hub with making her next career steps possible.
“I don’t think I would have achieved the same results without West North West Working. My old resume was years out of date, and I didn’t know how to tackle selection criteria. The support made all the difference.”
Judy is now beginning her next chapter in employment, with a fantastic opportunity with Kinetic to drive buses, she’s taking on new challenges with energy and optimism.
“Starting my new role has been a totally different experience. The training was challenging at times, but Kinetic were patient and supportive. It feels fantastic to be working again in a new field.”
For Alyssia, watching Judy’s journey has been just as inspiring.
“Watching Judy’s journey has been inspiring. She had such passion and drive to change direction, and she never saw trying something new as a barrier. It shows there’s no timeline on career transitions – you don’t need to have it all figured out.”
Judy is quick to encourage others who may be hesitant about seeking help.
“I’d say to anyone looking for work: do it, reach out to the Jobs Hub. You can’t do it alone these days. Having that support behind you makes all the difference.”
For Alyssia, Judy’s success is a reminder of the value of taking time to work with people one-on-one.
“At West North West Working, we take the time to sit down and really flesh out what someone wants. There’s no time limit — it’s about connection, collaboration, and making sure the support fits that person’s journey. Judy’s story shows how that individualised approach works.”
Judy’s story is one of persistence and belief in new possibilities. With the support of the Jobs Hub and her own determination, she’s shown what’s possible when tailored, one-on-one support meets personal drive.
Her success is a reminder that no matter your stage of life, it’s never too late to explore new opportunities, build new skills, and step into a new career.
And importantly, it highlights the strength of a collaborative approach — with West North West Working, TMEC, and atWork Australia working together to provide a supportive network around Judy, creating a clear path to success.
